Day 1,
I picked up an ancient Chinese instrument, made from snake skin, bamboo with a very nice polished wood.
My Chinese instructor (Master Shen), will remain nameless as this is his wish, however if anyone was ever interested learning the erhu (huqin) and your in Melbourne I would definitely recommend him. He is very thorough and his honesty is refreshing.
The bagpipes whining noise in the wrong hands are akin to the sounds the erhu produces. However i don’t think my neighbours mind, otherwise i am sure there would be encouraging banging on the walls, suggesting that i need more practice.
erhu, (er) meaning 2, which is the number of strings and (hu) is for,.. who knows. Please comment and correct me if you do. I have added images below, they include correct handling of the unit and its absolute entirety.
Shen did mention that in 1 and a half years i could play in an orchestra, my initial response was coy as i had not intended this hobby to be anything more as fun to pass time. However an important point i have recently observed at uni, if you reach for the moon and miss you will end up with the stars.
So my mission is to do as Shen instructed by doing the very basic action of moving the bow, however this must be done accurately and a strong focus is on generating a perfect technique, rather than hacking away at it until it sounds good.
“If you have 6 hours to cut down a tree, spend the first 4 hours sharpening the blade” – Shen

Hey good to hear you7ve picked up Erhu. And that you’ve decided to seek instructions from a teacher. Sounds like Sifu (‘master’ in chinese) Shen is a very wise man.
Looking forward to hearing more about it. Cheers,
Mutsumi
I can hear the greenies chanting, “SAVE OUR FORESTS”. Perhaps you can write a song for them to calm them down…
Why my country has pollution big problem! Too many men with sharp blades but no tree left.

I am seeing him tonight, i will ask, however he does not seem to be interested in additional work.
I have been crawling through the web in search of an Erhu teacher to no avail.

Hi my name is Emma, I am highly interested in learning the Erhu. I love chinese culture, as one day I wish I am able to live there. I was wondering if Master Shen or you know any Erhu teachers. As i live in north melbourne. It seems that Master Shen, does not want extra work, which is fine. Just a wonder if you knew any other teachers, that are wiling to teach Privet lessons. How did you purchase/own you Erhu?
I hope that this comment is not to late.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Emma
